Château Latour 2014

Het château zelf beschrijft het groeiseizoen en de wijn, Latour 2014, als volgt (in Engels): "After a mild and wet winter, warm conditions in March led to an early bud break: the Merlot on 21st March and the Cabernet Sauvignon 31st March. The weather was fine and summery in April and May, but rainy episodes after 19th May increased disease pressure. Fortunately, good weather in June was beneficial for the flowering with the Merlot in bloom on 2nd June and the Cabernet Sauvignon on 5th June. July was cooler than normal with regular rainfall which meant our team in the vineyard had to be extra vigilant to prevent the spread of fungal diseases. Even though temperatures increased after 15th July, our team remained under pressure until the Merlot berries changed colour on 6th August and the Cabernet Sauvignon on 9th August. Thanks to hot and dry weather in August and September, the berries ripened gradually and uniformly until harvest.

The Merlot harvest started on 18th September and continued until 26th September. The Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested in perfect weather beginning on 6th October and finishing on 15th October. Tasting comment: Dark and intense in colour. The nose is a heady mix of ripe red fruits, roasted sweet spice and perfumed violet notes. Silky smooth yet powerful on the palate, this Château Latour 2014 is a full-bodied wine with fabulous energy and a lovely, lingering finale."

Proefnotitie

Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent (mrt 2022) – "Deep garnet-black in color, the 2014 Château Latour needs a little swirling to unlock sophisticated scents of unsmoked cigars, Indian spices, smoked meats, and espresso over a core of cassis, baked plums, and boysenberry preserves, plus suggestions of dried mint and crushed rocks. The light to medium-bodied palate has a solid foundation of firm, grainy tannins and compelling tension framing the savory flavor layers, finishing with great length and impressive earthy fireworks. This vintage delivers a remarkably understated, quiet intensity, making it as deliciously drinkable as it is cerebral. Possessing approachable tannins and emerging tertiary notes while maintaining its core of black fruit preserves, it is delicious right now. It should continue to improve over the next decade and cellar for another 15+ years beyond that. The blend is 89.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9.2% Merlot, 0.6% Cabernet Franc, and 0.3% Petit Verdot, while the alcohol weighs in at 12.89%." 96.

Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux (feb 2022) – "The depth, power and just sheer confidence of Latour shines through. This is an extremely classic 2014 - everything in focus, with clarity, grip and poise, sculpted blackcurrant and blackberry fruits, touches of raspberry leaf and crushed rocks. Cabernet Sauvignon dominant, still strict and muscular in its tannins, with heft and width through the palate. As it opens graphite, violet and campfire smoke curls through the centre of the wine, along with slow and steady waves of saffron and sage spice. Easily one of the wines of the vintage, and one to take your time with, allowing the slow progression of flavours and textures to unroll at their own pace. It will benefit from another few years in bottle before really getting underway, and has decades ahead. Eric Boissenot consultant, Hélène Génin technical director. Harvest September 18 September to October 15." 96.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous (jan 2022) – "The 2014 Latour captures the personality of the year in its linear, lithe construction. It's a decidedly understated Latour that is more about finesse than brawn. Bright red cherry/plum fruit, spice, mint and sweet tobacco open over time, but at this level, wines are more about a feel, an expression of place and a vintage. The 2014 Latour embodies all the best this cool, late-ripening growing season had to offer. I loved the 2014 when it was first shown, about five years ago, and I love it today. It is a super-classic Pauillac." 96.

Georgina Hindle, Decanter (nov 2021) – "Reddish purple rim. Expressive on the nose; cocoa powder, truffle, soft spices, blackcurrant pastilles, black cherries and mint - the best Cabernet aromatics. Great delicacy here, this is so poised and elegant, a touch of soft sweetness to the red and black fruits. Tannins fill the mouth but this is well handled, less plump and round, more direct and linear but with a beautiful fragrance, delicacy and texture that fills the mouth but gently. Still so much juice and freshness as well as softly cooling mint tones. The fresh, vibrant flavour makes you think you could drink it now but it's only the tannins that suggest it needs longer. Still, it's lovely, with such well placed fruit flavours that hits all sides of the mouth and lingers long after the finish." 96.

Neal Martin, Vinous (mrt 2018) – "The 2014 Latour has a backward and austere bouquet that does not respond to coaxing from the glass. This is so broody and sultry, only reluctantly eking out pencil shaving and sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, finely judged acidity, quite dense and “solid” at the moment and yet there is elegance and stylishness to spare here. It just needs to manifest more charm and personality à la Mouton-Rothschild, but do not under-estimate this Latour whenever it is released. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting." 95.

Jancis Robinson MW (feb 2018) – "Tasted blind. Big and bold and spicy with intensity. So much on the end! Massive density. Dry tannins but luscious fruit too. Really pure and so Pauillac!" 19.
