Château Tronquoy Lalande 2018

In Inside Bordeaux schrijft Jane Anson in het algemeen over Tronquoy Lalande: "One of the most reliable buys of the appellation, with luscious black fruits and a menthol finish, this is a wine that has rarely disappointed me."

Chris Kissack (Winedoctor) besluit zijn uitgebreide online profiel van het château als volgt: "Looking back over more than a decade of ownership it is clear that the investments made by the Bouygues brothers, and the skilful hands first of Jean-Bernard Delmas, then of Hervé Berland, assisted throughout by Yves Delsol of course, have paid dividends here. This is now an estate turning out excellent wines, and offering excellent value for money. No longer an estate to watch, as I once wrote, this is an estate to follow with confidence."

Château Tronquoy Lalande ligt vanaf de Gironde gezien achter Montrose, en Meyney, centraal in de appellation. Ondanks de wat grotere afstand tot de Gironde is het water goed te zien: Tronquoy Lalande ligt relatief hoog in het landschap: op een croupe van gravel met veel klei op zo'n 23 meter hoogte. Merlot is dominant op dit diepe kleirijke terroir. De 2018 is het resultaat van 100% biologisch werken, maar nog zonder certificaat, dat volgt in 2024. De wijn heeft 12 maanden in Frans eiken gerijpt.

Over het 2018 groeiseizoen brengt het château als volgt verslag uit: "2018 was marked by atypical climatic conditions. The quality of the terroir allowed the vineyard to resist the pressure from parasites, which was particularly strong this year. The clay gravels of our soils mitigated the effects of the summer drought, while the high temperatures at the end of the season favoured good concentration in the grapes, which revealed all their potential in the cellar.

The year started, indeed, with a rainy winter, one of the wettest in the past 30 years, leading to slightly late bud burst. Stormy weather in spring strongly encouraged the appearance of mildew. The continuous responsiveness of our teams allowed us to preserve the quality of the bunches and maintain good yields. Only certain Merlot plots were slightly affected by poor fruit set at the time of flowering.

Veraison came early, the sign of an early vintage. It developed in a relatively quick and uniform way. A heatwave in early August saw the first symptoms of drought, but without water stress thanks to the quality of our terroir’s deep clays. Berry concentration increased slowly, in a uniform way. The first maturity analyses led to predictions of a great vintage.

Harvest took place under perfect conditions. In the cellar, the first use of an optical sorting table aided us in selecting the best of the crop. As fermentation progressed, it revealed great richness in the musts. Colour and structure came naturally, leading us to practise carefully controlled extractions."

Jancis Robinson januari 2022 – "Tasted blind. Rich, exotic, spicy nose – almost Mouton-like! Masses packed in here: fruit, tannin and character. Set for a very long life. Long and with masses of ingredients bursting out at the seams. Though it will need lots of time." 18.5

Chris Kissack, Winedoctor oktober 2021 – "This vintage from this estate, under the same management as Montrose, displays a dense colour in the glass, and a nose of crushed black plums and compote black cherry, nuanced with notes of soot which suggests tannins, and with a little black olive and black bean intensity too. A very rich style on the palate, polished, loaded with glossy texture and an all-pervasive core of ripe tannins. Dense and broad-shouldered, loaded with dark fruit and rich structural potential, this is certainly one for the cellar." 92

Jeff Leve, Wine Cellar Insider september 2021 – "Showing good color with cigar box, dark chocolate, black cherry and smoked plums at its core, the wine is rich, ripe, round and fruity with a gorgeous earthy character that is already shining. This is a superb vintage for Tronquoy Lalande." 93

Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate maart 2021 – "The sibling property of Chateau Montrose, Tronquoy-Lalande has a bit more clay in its soil profile and is more inland than Montrose, perched on the hilltop. Deep garnet-purple colored, it springs from the glass with vibrant scents of baked black cherries, mulberries and plum preserves, plus suggestions of spice cake, Sichuan pepper, tobacco leaf and menthol. The full-bodied palate is jam-packed with juicy, black fruit layers, supported by ripe grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long with a peppery kick." 93+

Neal Martin, Vinous februari 2021 – "The 2018 Tronquoy-Lalande is powerful and also inviting, with layers of dark-toned fruit that envelop the palate. Blackberry, gravel, spice, menthol, licorice, scorched earth and leather all flesh out in the glass. As it was from barrel, Tronquoy is a dark, somber wine. It has enough sheer richness to develop well for another 10-15 years, maybe more." 92
