Château Tronquoy 2019

In Inside Bordeaux schrijft Jane Anson in het algemeen over Tronquoy Lalande: "One of the most reliable buys of the appellation, with luscious black fruits and a menthol finish, this is a wine that has rarely disappointed me."

Chris Kissack (Winedoctor) besluit zijn uitgebreide online profiel van het château als volgt: "Looking back over more than a decade of ownership it is clear that the investments made by the Bouygues brothers, and the skilful hands first of Jean-Bernard Delmas, then of Hervé Berland, assisted throughout by Yves Delsol of course, have paid dividends here. This is now an estate turning out excellent wines, and offering excellent value for money. No longer an estate to watch, as I once wrote, this is an estate to follow with confidence."

A sweet, dry winter on the whole, a contrasting spring followed by a very hot summer with some heatwaves in July and a fine harvest, sum up the weather conditions for 2019.

The end of the exceptionally warm winter led to early budburst at the end of March. Uneven spring weather, with particularly cool April and May, causes the vines to lose their lead. Tronquoy's early-ripening terroirs favoured rapid, uniform flowering in just a few days. The first signs of veraison appeared on 30 July.

The hot summer was marked by a scorching July, making 2019 one of the hottest years of the decade. Once again, our clay gravel soils proved their ability to cope with drought. Finally, the saving rains at the end of August and mid-September kick-started the ripening process and helped the grapes to concentrate beautifully.

The harvest took place in good weather conditions. In the cellar, the grapes showed their full potential, heralding a great vintage. The juices quickly released their dense colours, auguring great concentration. The acidity/sugar ratio is very good and fermentation is proceeding normally. Gentle extractions are preserving the quality and elegance of the tannins. 2019 is taking shape in a precise style, in the fine tradition of the great "9" vintages."

Proefnotitie

Lisa Perrotti-Brown The Wine Independent, mei 2023 – "The 2019 Tronquoy-Lalande is made from 50% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it slowly unfurls to offers fragrant notes of rose oil, Indian spices, and licorice over a core of creme de cassis and stewed plums, plus a hint of lavender. The full-bodied palate is firm and sturdy, with grainy tannins and plenty of freshness to match the muscular fruit, finishing long and earthy." 94

Panos Kakaviatos Decanter, februari 2023 – "Savoury aspects to the nose here, black truffles and dark chocolate. Such a dark fruit profile - black plums, cherries, prunes, some fig, really majoring on the ripe black fruits with some treacle and coffee notes. Fine but grippy tannins also really take hold in the mouth producing quite a full style - dense and filling. An intersting, nuanced palate with just enough acidity to keep things fresh and balance the deep fruit profile. I like this style a lot." 93

Jancis Robinson, januari 2023 – "Tasted blind. Very deep, glowing crimson. Sweet, ripe and glamorous. Intense – like the essence of St-Estèphe. Stone tisane ... Combines the sweetness of the early wines in this flight with the stoniness of the later ones." 17.5

Neal Martin Vinous, januari 2023 – "The 2019 Tronquoy-Lalande has a concentrated nose with quite intense black fruit, touches of boysenberry, a little richer than some of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with a dense, powerful, almost burly entry, very saline in the mouth, yet I am seeking more precision and finesse on the finish. That may well develop with time. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting." 93

William Kelley The Wine Advocate, oktober 2022 – "Savoury aspects to the nose here, black truffles and dark chocolate. I like this style a lot." 93+

Jeff Leve The Wine Cellar Insider, maart 2022 – "Spicy, with tinges of wet earth, tobacco leaf, Asian spice, herbs and currants. The wine is rich, ripe, round, fleshy and packed with sweet, dark red pit fruits and wet earth, finishing with the right amount of dark chocolate, espresso, blackberries and currants. The wine should be allowed to age for a few years before popping a cork. 2025-2040." 94

Georgina Hindle Decanter, januari 2022 – "Savoury aspects to the nose here, black truffles and dark chocolate.

Chris Kissack The Winedoctor, december 2021 – "Château Tronquoy-Lalande (St Estèphe) 2019: The blend is 50% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot here. Concentrated and expressive on the nose, with an array of dark fruits, fragrant blackcurrant and currant, with little nuances of smoke, toast and tar. The palate is soft, supple, integrated, fresh, very honest, with sweet black fruits underpinned by a gravelly and minerally energy, with a lovely ripeness to the tannins which are tightly knit but very firm, and a fresh definition to the fruit. Plenty of tannic grip and energy at the end here. This is top work. The declared alcohol is 13.5%. From my Bordeaux 2019 assessment at two years." 93

Jane Anson Decanter, juni 2020 – "So much ripe juicy fruit here, striking depth and power to the berries. This has the seductive flesh of Merlot, and is overall extremely bright blueberry and blackberry, and full of vigour. The vines are now at 10 years after an extensive replanting programme, and are showing their potential." 93
