Proefnotitie

Antonio Galloni Vinous 94-96 – "The 2020 Léoville Barton was picked September 15–16 and matured in 70% new oak. It is one of the best vintages that I have encountered in barrel. Wow! This shoots from the glass with beautifully defined black fruit, mineral-rich aromas, pixelated with laser-like focus. The palate is medium-bodied with chiseled tannins, a perfect line of acidity, layers of vibrant, vivacious black fruit and a very persistent finish that is pure class. If you don’t have this in your cellar, then there will be a Léoville Barton–shaped hole to fill."

Neal Martin Vinous 94-96 – "The 2020 Léoville-Barton marries the richness of the vintage with the classically restrained style that is so typical of Léoville-Barton. Graphite, licorice and dark spice are all laced throughout a core of inky dark fruit. The 2020 is powerful and linear, with tons of depth lying in reserve, just waiting to emerge. I won't be surprised if Léoville-Barton is one of the last Saint-Juliens to enter its prime."

Jane Anson Decanter 94 – "Packed full of black chocolate shavings, liquorice, cocoa bean, concentrated cassis and bilberry fruits. Good quality, will bed down and age extremely well, with depth and character but also classicism. As with many in this corner of the Médoc peninsula in this vintage, the austerity to the tannins is very much to the fore right now. May be upscored when in bottle."

Lisa Perrotti-Brown Wine Advocate 93-95 – "The 2020 Léoville Barton reveals a deep purple-black color, springing from the glass with vivacious scents of crushed black cherries, cassis and black raspberries, plus hints of cinnamon toast, wild sage, red roses and sassafras. The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with muscular black fruits, framed by grainy tannins and loads of freshness, finishing long and perfumed."

Chris Kissack Winedoctor 97-99 – "In this vintage the blend is a remarkable 85.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14.5% Merlot, picked at a yield of just 34 hl/ha between September 14th and the 28th (another exclusively September harvest), on 50 hectares of vines. A stunning colour in the glass, an opaque violet-black hue, with a very tight plum-coloured rim. The nose has a huge expression, with a surprising perfume, the dark and curranty depths matched by notes of sweetly concentrated black cherry, dried black plum, sweet liquorice, black bean and black pepper. It is compact and at the very least intensely sweet and smoky. The palate follows this darkly driven style seen on the nose, with a wealth of concentrated black fruits, liquorice and crushed currant, with a rich wrapping of dark chocolate, violets, white peach, black pepper, sage and slate minerals. The tannins are densely packed in here too, and despite their rich and densely velvety character they give the palate a huge grip. Long and shimmering with tannin at the finish, this is a powerhouse Léoville-Barton, built in a style that seems to turn everything seen in previous vintages up to eleven. The alcohol, despite this prodigious build, is just 13.6% – that’s Cabernet Sauvignon for you. A first-growth pretender in this vintage, this reminds me a little of Gruaud-Larose 2000, a wine which made a statement. Something along the lines of “beat this”."
